Description
PWSIZE reports the population of the "place" where the respondent's primary workplace was located. Places include incorporated cities, villages, boroughs (except in New York and Alaska), towns (except in New England, New York, and Wisconsin), and unincorporated Census Designated Places (CDPs), which are densely-settled population centers without legally-defined powers.
In 1980, responses to questions about workplace location were coded for only half the respondents included in the IPUMS. Such cases provide accurate proportional distributions but not accurate absolute numbers for the population as a whole. To generate correct absolute numbers, users should select cases coded as 2 in MIGSAMP and multiply by 2 as well as by PERWT.
