Description
SHOWER indicates whether the housing unit provided access to a permanently-installed bath and/or shower. The bath or shower had to be located within the structure and did not have to provide hot water. Portable facilities did not count. For some samples and years, the variable also indicates whether the bath/shower was shared with the occupants of other housing units in the building.

Comparability
The comparability of this variable is affected by a difference in the coding between the 1990 Puerto Rican census and the other years and samples. In the censuses prior to the 1990 Puerto Rican census, the PUMS distinguished between exclusive use of a bathtub or shower (code "2") and shared use of a bathtub or shower (code "3"). In the 1990 Puerto Rican census, no such distinction was made and between exclusive or shared use of a bathtub or shower and therefore only one code is provided (code "4," Yes, exclusive or shared use of a bathtub/shower). Users may want to collapse codes "2" and "3" into one code in the 1960-970 U.S. censuses and in the 1970-1980 Puerto Rican censuses for comparability with the 1990 Puerto Rican census.
The data are fully comparable for the available 1960-1980 samples and years.
