Description
SIZEPL is a recode of CITYPOP, grouping places of similar sizes. See CITY and CITYPOP for further description and discussion of comparability issues. As with most of the location variables, confidentiality restrictions currently in effect for samples from 1950 forward, and previously in effect when some geographic variables were created for 1940, limit the identifiable places beginning in 1940. The second digit of SIZEPL, which classifies places of less than 100,000 population, is usually only applicable to the pre-1940 samples. (Some cities under 100,000 are identified in 1940 and 1950, if their population was 100,000 in 1980).
