Comparability
The 1850 census data record multiple holdings for approximately 2.5% of all slave holders. The 1860 census does not record multiple holdings.
The construction of SLAVEHOLDINGS depends on the linking of holders in the slave schedules to persons listed in the population schedules on the basis of name, with additional consideration of personal property value in 1860. Many holdings are not linked to the population schedules for one reason or another, so this variable understates the prevalence of slaveholding among the free population.
