Description
SLAVEOWN indicates the number of slaves specifically "owned" by an individual. It differs slightly from the count in SLAVENUM, which includes slaves held by a person under other arrangements than just ownership, such as slave employers.
Codes
This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.
Comparability
SLAVEOWN is only available in 1860.
The construction of SLAVENUM depends on the linking of holdings in the slave schedules to persons listed in the population schedules on the basis of name and personal property value. Many holdings are not linked to the population schedules for one reason or another, so this variable understates the prevalence of slave ownership among the free population.
