SPLITHID
Household serial number, before large group quarters were split up (100% datasets)

Description

SPLITHID provides the original household serial number in the 100% datasets.

As a part of IPUMS data processing, group quarters units containing more than 60 people were split into 1-person households, each with their own unique value in the IPUMS SERIAL variable. For this reason, the SERIAL variable makes it impossible to identify any group of people who share a group quarters unit containing more than 60 people.

Researchers needing to analyze intact group quarters units containing more than 60 people (such as the residents of a large prison or poorhouse) should use SPLITHID instead of SERIAL. SPLITHID assigns a common serial number to all residents of each housing unit and group quarters, regardless of size.

SPLITHID should be used in combination with SPLITNUM, which provides the original person number in the 100% dataset. PERNUM ranges from 1 to 60, whereas the range of SPLITHID may be comparatively larger since the reported number of persons residing within original group quarters units reported could be greater than 60.

Units that were split into 1-person households can be identified with the SPLITvariable.

Codes

This variable is only available in the 100% dataset. SPLITHID is an 8-digit numeric variable that provides the original household serial number in the 100% datasets. SPLITHID specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

User Note: SPLITHID should be used in combination with SPLITNUM, which provides the original person number in the 100% dataset. PERNUM ranges from 1 to 60, whereas the range of SPLITHID may be comparatively larger since the reported number of persons residing within original group quarters units reported could be greater than 60. Units that were split into 1-person households can be identified with the SPLITvariable.
