Description

SUBS4050 provides an alternate way of deriving representative subsamples. 1940 and 1950 were originally collected in 20 subsamples divided according to microfilm reel number. (Thus, subsample 1 within SUBS4050 was drawn from microfilm reels 1, 21, 31, and so on). In the IPUMS, these subsamples have been merged, but users can still identify the original subsamples using this variable. The 1940 and 1950 subsamples are clustered by geography; therefore, those who wish to use a portion of the 1940 or 1950 data sets are better advised to use the IPUMS variable SUBSAMP, which offers a nationally representative subsample.
