Description

TAXID is a unique identifier created to represent a tax unit for the purposes of estimating an SPM unit's federal and state tax liabilities. Because the ACS does not collect information about a household's tax obligations or if the respondent filed taxes, the Census Bureau used the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)'s TAXSIM tool to generate values for SPMFEDTAXAC, SPMFEDTAXBC, SPMEITC, SPMFICA, and SPMSTTAX.

Users should note that a tax unit is not necessarily the same as an SPM unit. Tax liabilities are aggregated at the SPM unit level, but there may be multiple tax units in an SPM unit. For example, a household that consists of two married parents and an adult child would have two separate values for TAXID.

For detailed information about how the Census Bureau derived these measures, please refer to the Supplemental Poverty Measure using the American Community Survey working paper.
