Description

VET1930 indicates whether the respondent was an ex-service veteran (Army, Navy, or Marine Corps) for any war or military expedition (Boxer Rebellion, Mexican Expedition, etc.). Those in the service during any period at which the U.S. was at war were considered veterans, as well as those who participated in a particular military expedition. Those in the service during peacetime were not to be considered veterans.

Comparability

VET1930 is only available for 1930. It differs from VET1940 in that it only asks about the status of veterans themselves, and not their family members. It differs from VETSTAT from 1950 through 1990 in that only former service men who served in expeditions or times of war are counted as veterans.

Note: Despite the universe for VET1930, there are 416 people in the 1930 sample who reported being in the armed services at the time of the survey (OCC1950=595) and being a veteran (VET1930>0).
