Description
VET1940 indicates whether sample-line persons answered "yes" to the original 1940 veteran status question: "Is this person a veteran of the United States military forces; or the wife, widow, or under-18-year-old child of a veteran?"
The code "8" ("Not ascertained") includes those sample-line persons who left this question blank.
Past active service in the U.S. military forces (Army, Navy, or Marine Corps) by men, in times of war or peace, were included in this veteran definition. It did not include men who were on active duty at the time of enumeration or men who had performed all their military service in the National Guard, the Reserves (Army, Navy, or Marine), Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Citizens' Military Training Camp, or other branch not a part of the regular military establishment.

Comparability
VET1940 is only available for 1940 and is the only variable in the IPUMS that identifies the wives, widows, and non-adult children of veterans. Children of a veteran were included even if their veteran father was dead; VETCHILD distinguishes between children with living versus dead veteran fathers.
Universe
- Sample-line persons.
