Description
MIGSAMP identifies persons contained in the 1980 migration/place of work/travel time sub samples. For each of the 1980 samples, the Census Bureau coded the responses for these variables for only half the cases included in the IPUMS, and gave these cases a code of 2 in MIGSAMP. The other half of the cases are coded N/A for the migration/place of work/travel time variables in 1980, and are coded 1 in MIGSAMP.
The subset of cases coded 2 in MIGSAMP accurately represent the proportion of people with a given characteristic for the migration/place of work/travel time variables. However, this sub sample does not represent the absolute number of people in the general population with that characteristic. To get correct absolute numbers, users should select cases with a value of 2 in MIGSAMP and multiply by 2 as well as by PERWT.
