PERNUM80
Person number, before large group quarters were split up, 1880 100%

Description

PERNUM80 provides the original person number in the 1880 100% dataset.

As a part of IPUMS data processing, group quarters units containing more than 60 people were split into 1-person households, each with their own unique value in the IPUMS SERIAL variable. For this reason, the SERIAL variable makes it impossible to identify any group of people who share a group quarters unit containing more than 60 people.

Persons in each of these new 1-person households were assigned a PERNUM value of 1, regardless of their location in the original group quarters unit. Researchers needing to analyze intact group quarters units containing more than 60 people (such as the residents of a large prison or poorhouse) should use SPLITHID and PERNUM80, instead of SERIAL and PERNUM.

SPLITHID assigns a common serial number to all residents of each group quarters and housing unit, regardless of size. PERNUM80 identifies the order that each person was listed by enumerators in all housing units and group quarters of all sizes.

Whereas PERNUM ranges from 1 to 60, PERNUM80 ranges from 1 to 2990, since the largest group quarters unit in the 1880 100% dataset contains 2990 people.

Units that were split into 1-person households can be identified with the SPLIT variable.

Codes

PERNUM80 is a 4-digit numeric variable which numbers all persons within each household consecutively in the order in which they appear in the original 1880 100% dataset. As a part of IPUMS data processing, group quarters units containing more than 60 people were split into 1-person households, each with their own unique value in the IPUMS SERIAL variable. Hence, while PERNUM ranges from 1 to 60, PERNUM80 ranges from 1 to 2990, since the largest group quarters unit in the 1880 100% dataset contains 2990 people. PERNUM80 specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
