Comparability

This variable is only available for the 2000 census (U.S. and Puerto Rico samples) and the 2000-2002 ACS. The 2003-2004 ACS merges this variable and VET95X00 into one variable (VET90X01).

The 2000 census and the ACS defined persons currently in the armed forces as veterans. So, too, did the 1990 census, but earlier censuses did not.

Universe

  • 2000: Persons age 17+.
  • ACS: Persons age 17+, currently or formerly in the armed forces.
