Description

ELEVATOR indicates whether housing units in structures of 4 or more stories had access to a passenger elevator.

In 1960, not all households received this question, and only 80 percent of cases in cities with 50,000+ residents in the IPUMS include the question. Such cases accurately represent proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers. See SAMP1960 for instructions on making appropriate corrections to derive absolute numbers for the total population in cities with 50,000+ residents.

Comparability

This variable is essentially comparable across years. The 1960 form asked whether respondents could use an elevator or had to "walk up." The 1970 and 1980 forms asked if there was a passenger elevator in the building; the 1970 form excluded freight elevators.
