PRTWNSHP
Puerto Rican township

Description

PRTWNSHP is an alphabetic variable that reports the first 35 characters of the Puerto Rican township/barrio where the enumerated household was located, as recorded on the census form.

Geography in Puerto Rico is based primarily on municipios. Municipios are the primary geographical divisions in Puerto Rico. For statistical purposes, the Census Bureau treats municipios as the statistical equivalent of U.S. counties. In 1910 there were 68 municipios in Puerto Rico and in 1920 there were 76 municipios in Puerto Rico. Each municipality was divided into barrios, and one or more of these barrios constituted the pueblo or town in the municipality. This town always bears the same name as the municipality. The enumeration districts were arranged so that each barrio was a separate district, except larger barrios, which were made up of two or more complete enumeration districts.

For the alphabetic version of Puerto Rican counties/municipios, see PRCOUNTA; for the numeric version see PRCOUNTY. The township (barrio) and county (municipio) codes should be used in conjunction to identify the respective barrio and municipality location. For the corresponding variable for Puerto Rican pueblos (cities), see PRCITYCO (a numeric variable).

User caution: PRTWNSHP contains alphabetic characters.
