Description

PRCOUNTA is an alphabetic variable that reports the first 15 characters of the Puerto Rican county/municipio where the enumerated household was located, as recorded on the census form.

A numeric version of the Puerto Rican counties is also available using the variable, PRCOUNTY. For counties in U.S. census samples, see COUNTYICP.

For corresponding variables on the Puerto Rican barrios (township) and pueblos (city) codes, see PRTWNSHP (and alphabetic variable) and PRCITYCO (a numeric variable), respectively.

PRCOUNTA is a 15-character alphabetic string variable which reports the first 15 characters of the Puerto Rican county/municipio where the enumerated household was located, as recorded on the census form. The township (barrio) and county (municipio) codes should be used in conjunction to identify the respective barrio and municipality location.

PRCOUNTA Specific Variable Codes
A question mark embedded in a name - '?' - indicates an illegible character
A question mark and space preceding a name - '?_' - means that the entry was difficult to read and the name is the best interpretation possible
An exclamation point - '!' - indicates the entire entry was illegible
An asterisk - '*' - indicates that the field was blank

Comparability

Excepting for the identification of more municipios in 1920, this variable is completely comparable across sample years.
