Description
YRLASTWK reports the year in which the respondent last worked for profit, pay, or as an unpaid family worker. (This includes military service, though current members of the armed forces were not to answer the question). The first digit of the variable records lengths of time that are comparable across years: "Worked in current calendar year," "Worked in previous calendar year," "Last worked 2-10 years ago," "Last worked 10+ years ago," and "Never worked." The second digit preserves intervalled responses not comparable across all years.

Comparability
In all years, any person not working the previous week was to answer this question, but some did not. The 1960 and 1970 samples removed non-response cases from the universe instead of allocating them, and the IPUMS leaves them unallocated. The 1980 and 1990 samples allocated responses when the question was not answered.
