Description

BLIND indicates whether the respondent was blind. For some cases in 1880, additional information regarding the nature of the blindness is available in the SICKNESS variable.

Comparability

The definition of blindness varied across years. In 1850, respondents were simply asked if they were blind. The enumerator instructions for 1860 stated, "Partial blindness should not be noted"; those for 1870 said, "Total blindness only . . . [is] intended in this inquiry." The 1910 enumerator instructions for the US and Puerto Rico samples defined blindness as "totally or partially blind, in both eyes, so as not to be able to read even with the help of glasses."
