MIGPUMANOW
Migration PUMA of residence, now

Description

MIGPUMANOW is a constructed variable that indicates the Migration PUMA in which an individual currently resides. For more information on relationships between PUMAs and Migration PUMAs, see the 2000 Migration PUMAs and Super-PUMAs reference page.

Note that MIGPUMANOW, like PUMA, is state-dependent. The codes must be read in combination with one of the STATE variables (STATEFIP or STATEICP).

Note Regarding Multi-Year Samples: The Census Bureau redraws PUMA boundaries every 10 years based on population information gathered from the most recent decennial census. ACS samples incorporate the new PUMAs within a few years of the Decennial Census. When PUMA definitions change so do MIGPUMANOW definitions. See the comparability statement to see which MIGPUMANOW definitions are used in each sample. In multi-year ACS/PRCS samples that span different PUMA definitions, this variable is based on whichever PUMA definition is associated with the respondent's survey year (as given by MULTYEAR). This occurs only in the 2022 5-year samples and in multi-year samples that include both 2011 and 2012 survey years. For more information about how PUMA definitions vary within multi-year samples, see the PUMA variable description.

Codes

MIGPUMANOW is a constructed 5-digit numeric variable that indicates the PUMA of migration in which an individual resides. MIGPUMANOW specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

User Notes: MIGPUMANOW, like PUMA, is state-dependent. Therefore, the codes must be read in combination with one of the STATE variables: STATEFIP or STATEICP.

Comparability

Due to population displacement following Hurricane Katrina, three PUMAs (01801, 01802, and 01905) are combined into code 77777 for the 2006-onward ACS and for all cases in the 2005-2007 ACS 3-Year file. They no longer had sufficient population to be included as separate entities. These PUMAs have code 77777 for MIGPUMANOW. Before 2006, these PUMAs fell into MIGPUMANOW codes 00018 and 00019. However, MIGPUMANOW code 77777 is not simply comparable with 00018 and 00019 (combined) because codes 00018 and 00019 also encompassed several other PUMAs in addition to these.

PUMA boundaries based on the 2020 Decennial Census are used for 2022-2031 ACS/PRCS samples and boundaries based on the 2010 Decennial Census are used for 2012-2021 ACS/PRCS samples.
