Description
For persons in full count census files other than 1850, LINK1850 indicates if that person is linked to the 1850 census. Linked persons receive a common Historical Identification Key (HIK) value across all censuses in which they are identified. See the HIK variable for more information.
For persons in the 1850 census, a LINK1850 value of 1 indicates that they are linked to another census year, and in some cases multiple census years.
The LINK variables (one for each historical census) are useful for limiting the dataset to the linked population, reducing its size. For this reason, the LINK variables are automatically included in an extract request if a user indicates that they want to link census data on theĀ sample selection page. By default, the resulting dataset will be limited to only cases that have a LINK value of 1. Users can modify this behavior by clicking on "Select Cases" on the Extract Request page before they submit their request.
