To facilitate obtaining the answer to this question, if the entry in col. 48 is "No" (a first marriage), ask the question, "What was the age of the woman at marriage?" For those women married more than once, ask the questions, "What was the age of the woman at first marriage?"

Where the marriage is evidently a first marriage, it may be good policy to ask for "age at marriage," rather than "age at first marriage," or to ask the question in this form and then make certain that the parties have not been married before.
