263. Item 38. Number of children borne by each woman.-An entry should be made for each woman who is married, widowed, divorced, or separated, and who is on the last sample line. Count all children ever born alive to this woman during her lifetime, including children by any previous marriage, children now deceased, and children not living in the household. Do not count stillbirths (births in which the infant never breathed). If the respondent asks whether adopted children should be counted, tell her they should not be; do not otherwise inquire whether any of the children have been adopted. Stepchildren of the woman should not be counted either.

627. Column 50. Number of Children Ever Born.-Enter in this column the total number of children ever born alive to this woman during her lifetime. It should include, therefore, children by any former marriage as well as by her present marriage. It should not include children to a former wife of her present husband, even though they are members of her present household. Stillborn children should not be included. Children born alive who are now dead should be included. If the woman has never had any children born to her, write "0" in this column.

116. Column 10. Number of children born.?This question applies to women who are now married, or who are widowed, or divorced. The answer should give the total number of children that each such woman has had during her lifetime. It should include, therefore, the children by any former marriage as well as by her present marriage. It should not include the children which her present husband may have had by a former wife, even though they are members of her present family. Stillborn children should not be included. If the woman has never had any children, write "0" in this column and also in column 11.

136. Columns 11 and 12. Mother of how many children and number of these children living.?This questions applies only to women, and its object is to get the number of children each woman has had, and whether the children are not living on the census day. Stillborn children are not to be counted.

137. Enter in the column 11 the figure showing the number of children born to this woman, as 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, etc. If she has had none, write "0." Enter in column 12 the figure showing the number of these children living on the census day. Whether the children are living in your district or elsewhere makes no difference. If the woman has had no children, or if they are all dead, write. "0."
