Description

COLL5YR indicates whether or not respondents were attending college five years earlier.

Comparability

The 1970 form simply asked, "In April 1965, was this person attending college?" The 1980 form stated that full- or part-time enrollment in courses leading to a degree was to be reported. Taking noncredit or correspondence courses or attending vocational or trade school were not included, unless credit could be transferred to a regular college or university. A similar definition of "attending college" applied to SCHOOL (School attendance).

Apart from the inclusion of a "not reported" category in 1970 (non-responses were allocated in 1980) and the more detailed instructions given in 1980, this variable is comparable across years.

Along with asking about college attendance five years ago, the 1970 and 1980 censuses asked whether the respondent was working or in the armed forces five years ago. These questions were not mutually exclusive; individuals responding "yes" in COLL5YR could also have responded "yes" to the other 5-years-ago variables, such as WORK5YR and MILIT5YR.
