Description

CONDO identifies condominiums -- housing units whose occupants share with other households the ownership and use of certain common areas and facilities. Condominiums may be units in apartment buildings, or single-family houses or mobile homes in a development.

Comparability

In 1970, only owner-occupied units were considered condominiums, and the question did not distinguish between owner-occupied cooperatives and condominiums. In 1980 and 1990, condominiums did not have to be owner-occupied to be considered condominiums (they could be vacant or renter-occupied), and the question distinguished between condominiums and co-operatives. In 2000, there was no direct question about whether the unit was a condominium. Instead, people living in condominiums were asked to report the amount of their condominium fee (see CONDOFEE). Only persons in housing units that were owned or being bought by a household member were to answer the question about payment of a condominium fee.

Testing done by the Census Bureau prior to the 1980 and 1990 censuses indicates that the number of condominiums may be slightly overstated.
