Description
DWSIZE reports how many persons lived within the entire dwelling that contained the sampled household. If the entire dwelling is included in the sample, DWSIZE is based on a computer count of person records. If only one household was taken from a multi-household dwelling, or if records of related groups or of individuals were sampled from within group quarters, DWSIZE is based on a hand count by the data-entry operator. A missing value indicates that it was impossible to determine dwelling size based on available enumeration information.
DWSIZE is a 4-digit numeric variable that reports how many persons lived within the entire dwelling that contained the sampled household. DWSIZE specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).
DWSIZE Specific Variable Codes
0000 = Vacant but habitable dwelling (1860 and 1870); N/A (1910 1.4% sample only, where SAMP1910 = 5 or 6)
9999 = Missing
Comparability
This variable is largely comparable across years. See "Sample Designs", SAMPRULE, and GQ for further discussion.
Users should note that in the 1910 and 1920 Puerto Rican Census samples, solares were enumerated as single dwellings and correspondingly DWSIZE reports the number of total persons living in the solar. Users should see also SOLAR along with the discussion of sampling procedures for solares in SAMPRULE.
Universe
- All households and group quarters. Not available for 25% of cases in 1910 US Census (samples 5 and 6 in SAMP1910).
