Description
HOMECNTY provides county of origin information for Alaskan residents.
In 1900 residents of Alaska were asked their "Post-office address at home." This information was coded to the state, county, city, and minor civil division level. HOMECNTY provides information on U.S. counties. HOMECNTY also provides additional information on the origins of Alaskan residents who came from Canada, Central America, the Carribean, and Portugal.
Additional geographic detail is available in HOMESTAT, HOMECITY, and HOMEMCD.
Since county codes are state specific, HOMECNTY must be used in conjunction with HOMESTAT. See the ICPSR county codes page for coding information.
This variable is only available for 1900. HOMECNTY is a 4-digit numeric variable which provides the county of origin information for Alaskan residents who were asked their "Post Office address at home". HOMECNTY specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
HOMECNTY Specific Variable Codes
For cases where HOMESTAT indicates that Alaskans moved from the United States, HOMECNTY uses the ICPSR County Codes, which are the same as that used in the COUNTYICP variable. In these cases, HOMECNTY codes are state-dependent and therefore must be read in combination with HOMESTAT.
