Description

HOMEMCD provides city or minor civil division of origin information for Alaskan residents.

In 1900, residents of Alaska were asked their "Post-office address at home." This information was coded to the state, county, city, and minor civil division level. HOMEMCD provides information on U.S. minor civil divisions.

Coding of HOMEMCD was based on a listing of codes used for the 1990 U.S. census. Many minor civil divisions that we encounter in the historical census data no longer exist because of political and administrative reorganization at the sub-county level. In these cases we assigned non-standard FIPS codes consistent with the present-day FIPS coding format.

Note that HOMEMCD is state-dependent. The codes must be read in combination with HOMESTAT.

This variable is only available for 1900. HOMEMCD is a 4-digit numeric code which provides the city or minor civil division of origin information for Alaskan residents. HOMEMCD specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).
