Description
INCORP provides codes for incorporated municipalities (e.g., cities and villages). The coding scheme generally follows the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS).
Coding of INCORP was based on a listing of codes used for the 1990 U.S. census. Many minor civil divisions that we encounter in the historical census data no longer exist because of political and administrative reorganization at the sub-county level. In these cases we assigned non-standard FIPS codes consistent with the present-day FIPS coding format.
Note that INCORP is state and county dependent. The codes must be read in combination with one of the state variables (STATEICP or STATEFIP) and the COUNTYICP variable.
INCORP is a 5-digit numeric variable that provides codes for incorporated municipalities (e.g., cities and villages). INCORP specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).
User Note: INCORP codes must be read in combination with one of the state variables (STATEICP or STATEFIP) and the COUNTYICP variable.
INCORP Specific Variable Codes
See the Codes for Minor Civil Divisions and Incorporated Municipalities for detailed INCORP codes.
Comparability
For the 1940 1% file, information on incorporated places has not been numerically coded and is available only via the alphabetic variable INCSTR.
Universe
- All households and group quarters. Not available in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or in the 1880 100% population database.
