Description

MICROSEQ provides the microfilm sequence number. On some microfilm reels, page numbers are not unique; they start over again from "1." MICROSEQ identifies from which sequence of page numbers (within the microfilm reel) the case was drawn.

MICROSEQ specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

Comparability

This variable is largely comparable across years. In the 1910 US and Puerto Rican census samples and in the 1920 Puerto Rican Census, the maximum value of MICROSEQ is 4; in all other years and samples, 2 is the maximum number of sequences per microfilm.

MICROSEQ can be used in conjunction with REEL, PAGENO, and LINE to locate the case on a microfilmed version of the original census form. (See REEL for further information.)
