Description

For respondents who lived in a different county 5 years before the census, MIGCOUNTY reports the county where the respondent lived at that time, using the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) coding scheme. Counties are assigned codes alphabetically within states. The first 3 digits are usually identical to the FIPS county codes used in other datasets; ICPSR adds a digit to the FIPS codes to accommodate change over time.

MIGCOUNTY is a state-dependent variable; it must be read with MIGPLAC5 to identify the state of residence 5 years ago.

Codes

MIGCOUNTY is a 4-digit numeric variable that identifies the county where the respondent was living 5 years ago, using the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) coding scheme. Counties are assigned codes alphabetically within states. This variable is comparable across years, but county boundaries change over time.

MIGCOUNTY codes are generally compatible with the ICSPR codes in historical county boundary files from IPUMS NHGIS and with all ICPSR county-level data files.
