MIGMETROD5
Metropolitan status 5 years ago, detailed (2000 only)

Description

MIGMETROD5 is an unrecoded variable indicating whether the respondent was living in a metropolitan or non-metropolitan area 5 years ago, in terms of the smallest geographic identifier available in the sample. In brief, metropolitan areas are counties or groups of counties centering on a substantial urban area; see METAREA for detailed discussion.

In the 5 percent sample, MIGMETROD5 indicates whether the PUMA (Public Use Microdata Area of 100,000+ residents, see PUMA) where the person lived 5 years ago was metropolitan. In the 1 percent sample, MIGMETROD5 indicates whether the Super-PUMA (Super-Public Use Microdata Area of 400,000+ residents, see PUMASUPR) where the person lived 5 years ago was metropolitan.

The codes for MIGMETROD5 distinguish between metropolitan areas and non-metropolitan areas. For geographic units consisting only of a metropolitan territory, areas inside a central city, outside a central city, and containing territory both inside and outside a central city are distinguished. The codes also distinguish PUMAs and Super-PUMAs based on Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) versus Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSAs). MSAs are surrounded by non-metropolitan territory and are not close to another large city; PMSAs are near and economically linked to another large city, with which they form a larger Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMSA) (see METAREA).
