NUMHH
Number of households in dwelling

Description

NUMHH reports how many households were included in the dwelling that contained the sampled household. If the entire dwelling is included in the sample (for dwellings of less than 31 inhabitants), NUMHH is based on a computer count of household records. If only one household was taken from a multi-household dwelling, or if a related group or an individual was sampled from a group quarters (see GQ), NUMHH is based on a hand count by a data-entry operator. A missing value indicates that it was impossible to determine the number of households based on available enumeration information.

In the case of solares, a type of dwelling in enumerated in the 1910 and 1920 Puerto Rican census, see SOLAR, NUMHH indicates the number of households in each dwelling in the solar, rather than the total number in the solar.

Codes

NUMHH is a 2-digit numeric variable which reports how many households were included in the dwelling that contained the sampled household. NUMHH specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

User Note: In the case of solares, a type of dwelling in enumerated in the 1910 and 1920 Puerto Rican census, see SOLAR, NUMHH indicates the number of households in each dwelling in the solar, rather than the total number in the solar.

NUMHH Specific Variable Codes
00 = Vacant but habitable dwellings (1860 and 1870)
98 = 98 or more households
99 = Not available

Comparability

This variable is comparable across years. See SAMPRULE and "Sample Designs" for discussion of sampling rules.

Universe

  • All households and group quarters. Not available for 25% of cases in 1910 US Census (samples 5 and 6 in SAMP1910).
