Description

OCCSTR contains the original unedited occupational entry from the census manuscript. Most users will prefer to use OCC1950 or OCC, which code the original occupational entries into coherent categories.

Codes

OCCSTR is an alphabetic string variable which reports the respondent's original unedited occupational response. It is used to construct the numeric variable OCC. OCCSTR specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
