Description
OTHURBYN identifies inhabitants of an Urban Area (UA) outside of Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) or in nonmetropolitan counties. The original classification of the URBRURAL variable grouped "Other Urban Areas and Places 25,000 or more" outside of any SMSAs into one category to satisfy confidentiality requirements. (See URBRURAL for additional information.) UA boundaries are determined by population density patterns with more than 1,000 residents per square mile. Places with more than 25,000 inhabitants outside of any UA or SMSA would have a population density less than the defined UA boundary level.
This variable is not available for North Central region, New England, West South Central, and Pacific census divisions. Users should consult the REGION variable description for a listing of states within these areas.
