Description

URBRURAL identifies urban and rural places within metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. The classification delineates places within the 1980 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) by population sizes over 500,000, under 500,000, and nonmetropolitan areas outside the SMSA. (See METAREA for additional information about metropolitan areas.) Residents within SMSAs are divided into central city, urban fringe, other urban, and rural places. Residents outside of the SMSAs or in nonmetropolitan areas are divided by the size of the place population.

Urbanized areas (UAs) in the 1980 Census have a concentration of at least 50,000 residents in a central city and contiguous suburban areas. The UA boundaries are based on population density levels of at least 1,000 persons per square mile. Since SMSAs are defined by county geography (or town and city borders in the New England census division), some UAs extend beyond SMSA borders. The "urban fringe" is part of the UA and encompasses the surburban or contiguous area surrounding the central city(ies).

"Other Urban" places are outside of UAs and have populations larger than 2,500 inhabitants. "Rural" areas have populations with fewer than 2,500 residents and may be a farm residence, sparsely populated areas, or a small city that is outside of an urbanized area.
