Description

PWMET98 traces the movements of workers from their residences to their workplaces, providing information not available in PWMETRO.

For discussion of the concepts "metropolitan area" and "central city," see the IPUMS household-record variable METAREA. For discussion of work status, see the IPUMS person-record variable EMPSTAT.

PWMET98 excludes all workers from the 1980 Urban/Rural sample and contains only about half of the workers contained in the State- and Metro-samples. The workers are classified differently depending on where they live and where they work.

Comparability

This variable is available only for 1980. In the IPUMS variable PWMETRO, it is recoded in such a way as to make it somewhat comparable with similar information contained in the 1960 1 percent and 1970 samples.

Universe

  • State- and Metro-sample persons age 16+ who worked last week (see EMPSTAT), were included in the migration/place of work/travel time samples (see MIGSAMP), and reported their place of work; persons not included if they worked outside the 50 states or outside of Puerto Rico.
