Description

PWSTATE1 reports whether persons who worked at all last week worked primarily in 1) the state (or territory, for Puerto Rico) in which they lived, 2) a contiguous state, or 3) a non-contiguous state. Respondents were not actually asked the question in this form; instead, they simply reported where their primary workplace was located, and their answers were recoded to fit the PWSTATE1 format.

Comparability

This variable is comparable across years. Users can combine the variables STATEFIP (indicating the state where the respondent lived) and PWSTATE2 (indicating the state where the respondent worked) to arrive at similar information for 1980 and 1990.
