Description

PWSTATE2 reports the state in which the respondent's primary workplace was located. If the person worked abroad, this is also indicated. In some cases, the state is not identified, such as in the 1980 Puerto Rico census (see below).

In 1980, responses to questions about workplace location were coded for only half the persons in the IPUMS. These cases yield representative proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers for the general population. To generate accurate absolute numbers for 1980, users should select cases coded as 2 in MIGSAMP and multiply by 2 as well as by PERWT.

Comparability

Sampling differences aside, this variable means the same thing across years. In some cases, PWSTATE2 is not specified, due to sampling design and/or confidentiality requirements. For example, the state is not identified when the PUMA or county group containing the workplace crossed state lines. Many smaller states are not identified in the 1980 Urban/Rural sample.

The ACS, the PRCS and the 1 percent sample for census 2000 include additional detail for persons who reported working abroad. Codes distinguish Europe, Eastern Asia, other parts of Asia, Mexico, and other Americas. These can be grouped together with the "other, n.e.c." category to achieve comparability with the general "abroad" category in the 5 percent sample for the 2000 census and in earlier years.

Users can use PWSTATE2 in conjunction with STATEFIP to create information similar to that yielded for the 1960 1% and 1970 samples in PWSTATE1 (which indicates whether the respondent's workplace was the same as, contiguous to, or not contiguous to the state of residence).
