SLPERNUM
Sample-line person number

Description

SLPERNUM reports the person-record number (PERNUM) of the sample-line person within each household. The 1940 and 1950 PUMS had an extra record for supplementary questions which were asked of 5 percent of the population in 1940 and 3.33 percent of the population in 1950. The sampling technique for the 1940 and 1950 PUMS ensured inclusion of one sample-line person in nearly every household in the sample. The IPUMS puts the sample-line information on the person record. The sample-line variables are missing (i.e., are coded N/A) for all non-sample-line persons. A code of 00 in SLPERNUM indicates that the sample-line record was left blank and that the household contains no sample-line person (a relatively rare occurrence). See "Sample Designs" for more information about sampling techniques for the 1940 and 1950 PUMS.
