Description

STORIES reports the number of floors in the building that contained the housing unit.1960 and 1970 did not count basements; 1980 did, if the basement contained rooms used for living purposes.

The 1980 PUMS was edited to be consistent with the "Units in structure" variable (UNITSSTR in the IPUMS), so that a response of fewer than 5 units in the structure automatically equals 1-3 stories for this variable.

In 1960, not all households received this question, and only 80 percent of cases in cities with 50,000+ residents in the IPUMS include the question. Such cases accurately represent proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers. See SAMP1960 for instructions on making appropriate corrections to derive absolute numbers for the total population in cities with 50,000+ residents.

This variable is not available for Puerto Rico.
