Usual industry, alphabetic string

Description

UINDSTR is the original string entry for the person's "usual" industry. Most users will prefer to use the coded variable UIND, which is constructed based on UINDSTR.

Codes

This variable is only available in the 1940 1% file. UINDSTR is a 30-character alphabetic string variable which reports the respondent's original unedited "usual" occupational industry response. It is used to construct the numeric variables UIND and UIND95. INDSTR specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
