Description

MILIT5YR indicates whether respondents were in the armed forces five years earlier.

Comparability

The 1980 form stated that only active duty in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard was to be reported. Participation in the National Guard or military Reserves did not count. A similar definition of military service applied to other veteran(s) variables; see VETSTAT. Because the 1970 form did not explicitly exclude service in the National Guard and military Reserves, some individuals may have counted this activity as being in the armed forces.

Apart from the inclusion of a "not reported" category in 1970 (non-responses were allocated in 1980) and the more detailed instructions given in 1980, this variable is comparable across years. In the Puerto Rican censuses, this variable is only available in 1980.

Along with asking about military service five years ago, the 1970 and 1980 censuses asked whether the respondent was working or attending college five years ago. These questions were not mutually exclusive; individuals responding "yes" in MILIT5YR may be included in other 5-years-ago variables, such as WORK5YR and COLL5YR.
