Description

In 1960, all persons included in the IPUMS answered the same population questions, but some of the housing questions were asked of only a subset of households in the IPUMS. SAMP1960 reports which set of housing questions the household members answered.

One dimension of SAMP1960 indicates whether the household received the PH4 census form, distributed in cities of 50,000+ inhabitants, or the PH3 form, distributed elsewhere. Only households in large cities were asked about the presence of elevators (see ELEVATOR) and the number of stories in the structure containing their housing unit (see STORIES). Only households outside large cities were asked about farm-related topics, such as land acreage of 10+ acres (see ACREPROP), land rented for farming (see LANDRENT), and gross receipts from the sale of farm products (see FARMPROD). Questions about sewage facilities (see SEWAGE) and the source of water supplies (see WATERSRC) were also only asked outside large cities.

All cases included in the IPUMS for 1960 are drawn from the 25 percent of households that received the long-form questionnaire. Of these long-form households, four-fifths (or 20 percent of all households) received one additional set of housing questions, while the other fifth of long-form households received different additional housing questions. The second dimension of SAMP1960 reports whether a given household was in the 20 percent or the 5 percent subsample for these additional housing questions. Thus, for example, a household coded as 1 in SAMP1960 has a label of "20% form, PH3 sample." This indicates the household received the form distributed outside large cities and the additional housing questions given to 20 percent of all households (and to 80 percent of the long-form households).

The following household variables are available only for the indicated samples:

 VARIABLE    SAMPLE
 ACREPROP    PH3
 AIRCON     5% form
 AUTOS    5% form, PH3 and 20% form, PH4
 BASEMENT    20% form
 BATHRMS    20% form
 BEDROOMS    5% form
 DRYER    5% form
 ELEVATOR    20% form, PH4
 FARMPROD    PH3
 FREEZER    5% form
 FUELHEAT    5% form
 LANDRENT    PH3
 RADIO    5% form
 SEWAGE    20% form, PH3
 STORIES     20% form, PH4
 TV    5% form
 UNITSSTR    20% form
 WASHER    5% form
 WATERSRC    20% form, PH3

Cases excluded from the universe for a variable by the 1960 sampling scheme receive a code of N/A for that variable. Thus, for example, all households in large cities (receiving the PH4 form) get a code of N/A in FARMPROD, and all households outside large cities (receiving the PH3 form) get a code of N/A in ELEVATOR. Households in the 20 percent subsamples receive a code of N/A in AIRCON; those in the 5 percent subsamples get a code of N/A in BASEMENT.

SAMP1960 is most salient for researchers interested in the absolute frequency (rather than the relative frequency) of a given housing characteristic in the general population. The subset of cases included in the 20 percent and 5 percent universe for the variables in the above table accurately represent proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers for housing units in 1960. To calculate correct absolute numbers, users should, in general, multiply cases in the 20 percent subsamples by 125 (or by 1.25 and by PERWT) and should multiply cases in the 5 percent subsamples by 500 (or by 5 and by PERWT). For AUTOS, cases coded as 3 in SAMP1960 should be multiplied by 500 (or by 5 and by PERWT), and cases coded as 2 in SAMP1960 should be multiplied by 125 (or by 1.25 and by PERWT) to derive correct absolute numbers.
