Comparability
The general categories of "public" (code 2) and "private" (codes 3-7) are comparable for all years. However, the classification of private schools differs across years:
The 1960, 1990, and 2000 censuses, the ACS, and the PRCS simply distinguished between public and private and did not contain further categories.
The 1970 census distinguished between "parochial" and "other private" schools. "Parochial" denotes primary and secondary schools supported by religious organizations, but not religious colleges, which respondents should have reported as "other private."
The 1980 census distinguished between "church-related" and "other private" schools. "Church-related" differs from "parochial" in that it includes religious colleges as well as primary and secondary schools.
The definition of what constituted school enrollment changed slightly after 1960. Nursery school did not count in 1960, while it did in the 1970-2000 censuses, the ACS, and the PRCS. A corresponding change was the inclusion of 3- and 4-year-olds in the universe beginning in 1970. In all years, enrollment within regular (public or private) elementary and secondary schools and colleges counted as school attendance. Other types of adult education generally counted only if the courses would be accepted as work toward a high school diploma or college degree. (See SCHOOL for more a detailed discussion.)
