Description
FAMSIZE counts the number of own family members residing with each individual, including the person her/himself. Persons not living with others related to them by blood, marriage/cohabitating partnership, or adoption are coded 1.

Comparability
From 1850 to 1930, all familial relationships can theoretically be identified, but for samples from 1940 onward familial relationships cannot be identified for persons in group quarters. Group quarters individuals in the period since 1940 are coded 1 in FAMSIZE, even though on rare occasions they may actually have resided with family members.
The comparability of this variable is affected by the information available on family relationships. FAMSIZE is based on the information contained in RELATE (Relationship to household head), MOMLOC, POPLOC, and SPLOC, for all years except 1850-1870. In these years, it is constructed from IMPREL (Imputed relationship). See MOMRULE, POPRULE, SPRULE, and "Family Interrelationships" for a discussion of variations across years in these variables.
