Description
MBPL reports the state, territory, or foreign country where the respondent's mother was born. The codes for MBPL are the same as for BPL (Birthplace). As with BPL, MBPL has a general code distinguishing places available in multiple years and a detailed code noting places unique to certain years or indicating areas that are strictly subsets of other countries.

Comparability
The comparability problems presented by MBPL are largely the same as for BPL; see the comparability discussion for BPL. In 1950-1970 Censuses, and the 1970 and 1990 Puerto Rican Censuses, respondents with mothers born in a U.S. state were simply to respond "United States;" specific birthplaces of mothers born in U.S. U.S. territories were reported.
In 1960 and 1970, as in other years, the census collected information on both the mother's and the father's place of birth (see FBPL). However, for persons with both parents foreign-born, the 1960 and 1970 PUMS only reported the country of birth for fathers. In those samples, mothers of persons with both parents foreign-born are coded 90010 ("Abroad, n.s.") in MBPL.
