Description
MIGCITY5 reports the city where the respondent resided 5 years ago, if that city could be identified under the confidentiality requirements of a given sample.
For 1980, 1990, and 2000 samples, MIGCITY5 identifies no city codes for individuals who lived in the same residence 5 years before the census.
For the 1980 census, the universe is also dependent on the variable, MIGSAMP.
MIGCITY5 is a 4-digit numeric code reporting the city where the respondent resided 5 years ago, if that city could be identified under the confidentiality requirements of a given sample.
MIGCITY5 Specific Variable Codes
0000 = N/A (Not in universe, or city not identifiable from public-use data)
0001 = Not ascertained (1940)
Note that the 0000 code applies to individuals who lived in the same residence 5 years ago as well as those whose previous residence was not in an identifiable city. Users who wish to distinguish these two conditions should use MIGRATE5 in conjunction with MIGCITY5.
See the codes of CITY for list of MIGCITY5 codes.
Comparability
For 1940, MIGCITY5 only identifies the central cities of select metropolitan areas (those meeting the confidentiality requirements outlined in CITY and METAREA). For 1980-2000, MIGCITY5 is constructed using the method described in CITY (i.e., derived from the PUMA or county group of residence 5 years ago, see the PUMA variable description for more information on PUMAs). In all years, numerous large cities cannot be identified. In 1990 and 2000, a number of cities identified in CITY are not identified in MIGCITY5.
In 1980, responses to questions about migration were coded for only half the persons included in the IPUMS. These cases provide accurate proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers for the population as a whole. For correct absolute numbers, users should select cases coded as 2 in MIGSAMP and multiply by 2 as well as by PERWT.
The following cities in each of the 1990 samples are not uniquely identifiable within the three digits of detail provided in MIGPUMA:
