MIGMET1
Metropolitan area of residence 1 year ago

Description

MIGMET1 reports which metropolitan area the respondent lived in one year ago. Metropolitan areas were only identified if the size of the metropolitan area was large enough to be identified by name under confidentiality requirements. Metropolitan areas consist of a large central city and surrounding counties that are economically integrated with that city; see METAREA for a detailed definition.

Note about 2012 ACS samples: The Census Bureau redraws PUMA boundaries every 10 years based on population information gathered from the most recent decennial census. The 2012 ACS files are the first to use the new PUMA codes and boundaries based on the 2010 Decennial Census. The Census Bureau also constructs Migration PUMAs (MIGPUMA1) to be used with migration variables. Because this variable is based on Migration PUMA boundaries in contemporary samples, it is not currently available for 2012 ACS files. IPUMS-USA is working on constructing as many identifiable units as possible based on the new Census 2010 MIGPUMAs.

Users who wish to construct this variable can use the logic described in the Comparability statement to identify geographic areas using MIGPUMAs. A map showing the new Census 2010 MIGPUMAs is available in the IPUMS-USA Geographic Tools area.

Comparability

This variable is available for the 1950 Census and the 2005-onward ACS and PRCS samples. The data are largely comparable across the 1950-onward samples, but there are important differences to note. The definitions of metropolitan area, captured in the METAREA variable, varied across the years, though the conceptual idea of metropolitan area remained the same between these two samples. In addition, there are universe differences between the 1950 Census and ACS/PRCS samples, as the universe for the latter does not include those persons living abroad. Persons living abroad are not excluded from the 1950 Census universe. MIGMET5 provides analogous information for 1940 and 1980-2000 using a 5-year rather than a 1-year reference period.

Universe

  • 1950: Sample-line persons age 1+.
  • ACS, PRCS: Persons age 1+ who were living in a different house in a U.S. metro area one year ago.
