Description
PROBOTH indicates whether a non-Hispanic gave an 'other race' response to the census race question (see HISPAN and RACE). It is parallel to the four variables indicating the probability of particular single-race responses for multiple race individuals (PROBAI, PROBAPI, PROBBLK, and PROBWHT). See RACESING for an explanation of how these variables can be used. Due to requirements of the bridging methodology used to create RACESING, all people in the 'other race' category of RACESING (code 50) are non-Hispanics who reported only 'other race'. PROBOTH is equal to 100 for these people and is equal to 000 for everyone else. Like the other race probability variables, PROBOTH must be divided by 100 before being used. Hispanics who reported 'other race' as their only race were given code 12 in RACESING to enhance historical compatibility; they have a PROBOTH of 000 and a PROBWHT of 100.
PROBOTH is a 3-digit numeric variable which represents whether a non-Hispanic gave an 'other race' response to the census race question (See HISPAN and RACE). It is parallel to the four variables indicating the probability of particular single-race responses for multiple race individuals (PROBAI, PROBAPI, PROBBLK, and PROBWHT). PROBOTH has two implied decimals. For example, a PROBOTH value of 068 should be interpreted as 0.68. PROBOTH specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
PROBOTH Specific Variable Codes
000 = All Other Respondents
100 = Non-Hispanic 'Other race' Respondents
User Note: Due to requirements of the bridging methodology used to create RACESING, all people in the 'other race' category of RACESING (code 50) are non-Hispanics who reported only 'other race'. PROBOTH is equal to 100 for these people and is equal to 000 for everyone else. Hispanics who reported 'other race' as their only race were given code 12 in RACESING to enhance historical compatibility; they have a PROBOTH of 000 and a PROBWHT of 100. For an explanation of how the predicted probability was calculated see RACESING.

The concept of race, as used by the Census Bureau, reflects self-identification by individuals according to the race or races with which they identify.
The instruction before question 5, "For this survey, Hispanic origins are not races" reflects the federal government's treatment of Hispanic origin and race as separate and distinct concepts. People who identify their origin as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish may be of any race.
People may choose to provide two or more races either by marking two or more race response boxes, by providing multiple write-in responses, or by some combination of marking boxes and writing in responses.
If you mark the "American Indian or Alaska Native" box, also print the name of the tribe(s) in which the person is enrolled. If the person is not enrolled in a tribe, print the name of the principal tribe.
If you mark the "Other Asian" box, print the name of the specific race(s) or group(s) in the space provided. The category "Other Asian" includes persons who identify themselves as Laotian, Thai, Pakistani, Cambodian, Sri Lankan, and so on.
If you mark the "Other Pacific Islander" box, print the name of the specific race(s) or group(s) in the space provided. The category "Other Pacific Islander" includes persons who identify themselves as Fijian, Tongan, Polynesian, Tahitian and so on.
If you mark the "Some other race" box, print the race(s) or group(s) in the space provided.
This question should be answered by ALL persons.
