Description

PWCOUNTY identifies the county (or county equivalent) where the respondent worked, if the respondent's workplace was in an identifiable county.

PWCOUNTY uses the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) coding scheme, as is used by COUNTYFIP. FIPS county codes are state-dependent, so PWCOUNTY must be combined with state codes (see PWSTATE2) to distinguish counties located in different states.

The source PUMS files do not directly identify place-of-work counties. IPUMS instead identifies counties, where possible, from Place-of-Work PUMAs (PWPUMA00).

In multi-year ACS/PRCS samples that span different Place-of-Work PUMA definitions, this variable is based on whichever Place-of-Work PUMA definition is associated with the respondent's survey year (as given by MULTYEAR). This occurs only in the 2022 5-year samples and in multi-year samples that include both 2011 and 2012 survey years. For more information about how Place-of-Work PUMA definitions vary within multi-year samples, see the PWPUMA00 variable description.

PWCOUNTY identifies a county if and only if:

  • it was coterminous with a single Place-of-Work PUMA; or
  • it contained multiple Place-of-Work PUMAs, none of which extended into other counties.

For a listing of the counties that PWCOUNTY identifies, see the "MIG-PW" sheets in this Excel document:
